Alumna Dr. Laura Stevens is an Instructor of Music Theory and Recruitment Coordinator at UNCSA. She is the Principal Flutist of the Western Piedmont Symphony and plays 2nd flute/piccolo with the Salisbury Symphony — positions she has held for over 20 years.
Stevens has performed concertos with several orchestras, most recently with the Western Piedmont Symphony, North Carolina Chamber Orchestra and Danville Symphony Orchestra. She is an active recitalist and chamber musician who performs throughout the region with a passion of showcasing music written by women composers. She is a member of Elektra Winds, an all-women wind quartet, who can be seen performing throughout the east coast, frequently premiering new works. Stevens has been teaching in higher education for over two decades, creating curriculum and building thriving flute studios for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, High Point University and Lenoir-Rhyne University.
Stevens holds degrees from the Salem College School of Music (B.M.), the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (M.M.), and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (D.M.A.). Her principal teachers were Debra Reuter-Pivetta, Tadeu Coelho and Deborah Egekvist. While at UNCG, her research culminated in the unearthing of an 18th-century flute and string quartet written by Joseph Aloys Schmittbauer, which only exists in a manuscript copy form within the Moravian Music Archives. She resides in Winston-Salem with her two daughters and her husband, Bill Stevens, who owns and operates Ovation Sound Recording Studio.
