Mark Norman

Mark Norman's teaching philosophy is to develop students to become their own best teachers. Students have lessons usually once a week yet they practice for hours each day. This means they have to have tools in how to identify and address issues on their own. Norman provides pedagogical information and consistently ask students what they hear and how they would begin the process of improving issues in performance.

• Solo Performances of the Ralph Vaughan Williams “Concerto for Bass Tuba” with the McLean, Georgetown, and Mt. Vernon Orchestras
• Winning the Scottish Open Brass Band Championships with the Fountain City Brass Band (1^st North American Band to win a championship in foreign soil)
• Meeting so many great people, musicians and artists throughout my career
• Commissioning 22 compositions in full or in part with composers including David Maslanka, Joel Puckett, Barbara York and Brian Balmages

• 1^st Tuba Performer to win the UNC Greensboro Concerto Competition
• Nominated as a finalist for a Virginia Governor’s Award
• Member of the Fountain City Brass Band in winning the following competitions: 2009 Scottish Open Brass Band Championships, 2010 North American Brass Band Championships, 2009 and 2010 U.S. Open Brass Band Championships
• Two-time 1^st Place Winner of the Southeast TUBA Solo Competition
• 2^nd Place Winner of the International Tuba/Euphonium Association Quartet Competition in Budapest, Hungary with Tubas in the Sun
• Grammy Nomination for producing the recording “Fireworks” with the UNC Greensboro Wind Ensemble
• Honorary member of the Phi Mu Alpha and Sigma lota Gamma honor music fraternities
