Janine Hawley

Janine Hawley joined UNCSA as a full-time faculty member in 2013. She is a Professor of Voice (singing) in the School of Drama, teaches Acting for Singers in the School of Music and is founding director of the Acting Out community program. She has been an Assistant Dean since 2019.

  • Metropolitan Opera's “Otello” with Placido Domingo and Renée Fleming (Deutsche Grammophon recording).
  • New York City Opera's tour of “Carmen.”
  • Mahler Symphony No. 2 in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
  • World premiere of “Songs from the Edge” by Israeli composer Ella Milch-Sheriff with the Audubon Quartet at the Chautauqua Institution.
  • Solo performances with Philadelphia Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, Utah Opera, New Orleans Opera, Fort Worth Opera, Chicago Opera Theatre, Connecticut Opera and more.
  • Symphony soloist with Detroit Symphony, Vancouver Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, Hartford Symphony, Chautauqua Symphony, and in such venues as Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall and the Kennedy Center.
  • Director of High School Voice Institutes at the Brevard Music Center.

  • Young Artist of the Year Award from Kennedy Center’s Washington Opera.
  • Finalist or Semi-Finalist in multiple national and international competitions including the George London Foundation, Pavarotti International Voice Competition, MacAllister Competition, Opera Index, Center for Contemporary Opera and Liederkranz Competition.
  • UNCSA Excellence in Teaching Award, 2019.
