Performance Overview
Just in time for spooky season, the UNCSA Improvised Music and Jazz Studio presents a Halloween celebration of improvisational and adventurous multi-genre small group combos. This performance, held at a surprise off-campus location fitting for the holiday, marks the culmination of a weeklong residency with the Jonathan Scales Fourchestra — a power trio of electric bass (E'Lon JD), drums (Maison Guidry), and steel pans (Jonathan Scales) combining elements of jazz, classical, and progressive rock, peppered with Latin rhythms and soulful outbursts of funk.
The Fourchestra has performed on club and festival stages across North America and Europe, toured Africa, Southeast and Central Asia as a Cultural Ambassador for the US Department of State, and performed on a NPR Tiny Desk Concert featuring Béla Fleck The UNCSA Improvised Music and Jazz Studio performs under the direction of Steve Alford, chair of the Jazz and Contemporary Department in the School of Music.
